What is Salvation?

What is Salvation?

Every journey begins with a first step and the journey of following Jesus is no different. So, what is that first step? It is accepting the gift of salvation that Jesus offers to anyone who asks for it.

The word salvation probably isn’t unfamiliar to you. People have received salvation (been saved) from all kinds of things including everything from floods, earthquakes, and other natural disasters to being lost or injured.

But what is the gift of salvation Jesus offers us connected to? In simple terms it is salvation from a spiritual disaster. A disaster every person who has ever lived has been the victim of. A disaster known as sin.

Here’s the bad news – people who never receive the gift of salvation from the disaster of sin will suffer eternal death and separation from God because of it. But there is good news as well. Receiving the gift of salvation from sin will bring you eternal life and connection to God.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord,” (Romans 6:23)

There are some people who believe they can earn salvation by doing good things or by trying to live according to some religious rules or regulations. But that’s not what the verse above says. It says salvation is a gift.

The gift of salvation has been available to receive for a long time, but how do we get it for ourselves? It’s not complicated. It’s really as simple as A-B-C.

A – Acknowledge (own up to the fact) that you have sinned to God.

B – Believe Jesus paid the death penalty your sins deserved so you wouldn’t have to pay it yourself.

C – Confess (declare) to God that from now on Jesus will be the lord (the one in control) of your life.

These three things are the first steps of faith in your spiritual journey of walking with Jesus. When you take these steps of faith not only do you receive salvation from sin, you also receive other blessings. Here are a few of them:

– You are adopted and become children of God. (Galatians 4:4-7)

– God does a miracle and makes you new. (2 Corinthians 5:17)

– You are given the righteousness of Christ. (Romans 4:4-5)

– You receive an inheritance from God called eternal life. (Ephesians 1:13-14 & I Peter 1:3-5)

The internal evidence of salvation is the confidence God gives you that you are a child of God. The external evidence happens as God’s ways begin to come out in your attitudes and behaviors, known as the fruit of the Holy Spirit. (Galatians 5:22-23)

As I said before, this is the first step of a lifelong journey. So, if you’re choosing to surrender your life to Jesus, we want to celebrate with you!  Be sure to let us know and we will send you some helpful next steps.
